Our Exciting New Sensory Baking Initiative

care home baking activity

We’re excited to introduce The Mixing Bowl Project, an exciting new initiative here at Almond Valley Care Home in Livingston. Led by Sheryl, this sensory baking project invites residents to explore foods from around the world alongside more familiar, traditional seasonal bakes.

The rich sensory experience sparks enthusiasm through textures, smell, and of course, delicious tastes. Safety is paramount in all our care home activities, so equipment is colour coded. All hot or electrical equipment is colour coded to promote safety while encouraging independence, and ensuring residents can have hands-on access to our baking activities.

January has been our Scottish themed month and so far we’ve baked adorable Highland Cow Cupcakes and indulgent Scottish Tablet Cookies. More treats on the menu for later in the month and we also have future themes to look forward to, with Valentine’s Day and Irish-inspired baking coming up soon. All the residents love getting stuck in and now look forward to Wednesday mornings in the cafe.

The project was made possible thanks to funding raised by our Manager, Maggie, Activities Organiser, Lynn, and family member, Alan. They bravely took part in the 40th Anniversary New Year’s Day Loony Dook, plunging into the icy waters of the River Forth to raise funds for our new mini oven, electrical equipment and baking trolley. Their dedication and enthusiasm have helped bring this wonderful project to life for our residents.

Baking sessions in care homes encourage reminiscence, creating new shared memories, social conversation, cultural curiosity and meaningful engagement. The sensory stimulation helps foster a relaxing environment and relieve anxiety while the social aspect reduces depression and loneliness and improves brain health. Taking part in a group project also creates a sense of achievement, boosting self esteem and resilience.

If you'd like to share a recipe with our residents, please get in touch with our friendly team, we'd love to hear from you!
